About us

Chris Reed - chief executive of Northumberland Care TrustNorthumberland Care Trust covers England’s most northerly county with a population of 317,000 living in rural and urban areas.

We were established in 2002 following the dissolution of Northumberland Health Authority and were the first primary health, community health and social care based trust in England and Wales. We developed the trust in partnership with Northumberland County Council, with which we have a very close working relationship.

We have shared management arrangements with Newcastle PCT and North Tyneside PCT and as such have the same chief executive and share some executive board members.

Our main headquarters are now based at Bevan House, Newcastle Great Park.

We are responsible for tackling health inequalities across the county, including promoting healthy lifestyles, developing primary and community health services and commissioning health and social care.

We also commission social care services for adults and agreements are in place with a range of service providers, from other NHS trusts and other statutory, voluntary and independent sector organisations.

Our main providers of services are Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We work closely with Northumberland County Council and have regular meetings with their leader and chief executive.

We are also part of Northumberland’s Local Strategic Partnership network.

In Northumberland there are 48 general practices, 44 dental practices, 70 community pharmacies and 36 optical practices.

We are one of 12 primary care organisations in the North East and we work into the North East Strategic Health Authority, which is our link to the Department of Health and national policy making.
