Research

As part of a masters in public health final empirical project, Maureen Shepherd, workplace health manager, carried out a research project on workplace health titled:

'Do employees perceive an effect upon their health behaviour or health awareness following participation in a workplace health award?'

The research concentrated on interviewing workers rather than managers, which was in contrast to other research that has previously been undertaken. The research was intended to help evaluate the success of the Northumberland Healthy People Healthy Business (HPHB) award and to help plan the future development of the project.

Four businesses were selected from those organisations that were just beginning the gold level of the HPHB award. This meant that they were still engaged with the award process but had done the health promotion campaigns and events at the bronze and silver levels of the award.

The research has highlighted areas of increased health awareness and behaviour change in some organisations which may be directly linked to participation in a workplace health award. It has also identified areas where behaviour change is more challenging.
