This year’s Healthy People – Healthy Business Conference
celebrates a decade of helping businesses across Northumberland.
The conference, launched ten years ago, is free to
representatives of local businesses and organisations. It is part of
Northumberland Care Trust’s programme of working with the business community to
improve the health of the workforce.
This year, the event focuses on Employ Ability Supporting
People at Work – Supporting People into Work. It will take place on Tuesday,
December 2 at the Britannia Hotel, Newcastle Airport.
The aim is to enable employers to retain skilled
employees, reduce sickness absence, tap into the skills potential of the
workless population and become an exemplar employer.
The day-long programme includes keynote speakers, good
practice presentations, workshops, displays and free advice and
resources.
There will also be the Healthy People Healthy Business
Award presentation for businesses which have achieved bronze, silver or gold in
the scheme.
The Award has been running for almost seven years,
supporting over 70 local businesses and reaching over 25,000 employees and
focuses on areas including smoking, healthy eating, mental health and well-being
and physical activity.
Healthy Workplace Specialist for Northumberland Care
Trust, Maureen Shepherd, said: “We hope as many people as possible will come to
our tenth annual conference and would particularly welcome delegates from
retail, manufacturing, hospitality and transport sectors.
“But the conference is open to representatives from all
public and private sector organisations in Northumberland.”
Northumberland’s acting director of public health, Sue
Gordon, said ‘Health People, Healthy Business’ was an important way the local
NHS could support local employers in helping their workforce be as healthy as
possible.
Dr Gordon said: “The majority of people spend a large part
of their lives at work so it makes sense that we look at how we can support
local employers with free resources to help their workforce be as healthy as
they can. A healthy work force means less sickness absence and if employees are
healthier it usually means that they are happier and therefore more productive.
It could be as simple as setting up a walking club at lunchtime or our stop
smoking service could come into the workplace and hold sessions to help smokers
quit.”
