Involving patients in NHS decisions
Section 11 of the Health and Social Care Act 2001 (now section 242 of the consolidated NHS Act 2006) places a duty on NHS trusts, Primary Care Organisations (PCOs) and Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) - to make arrangements to involve and consult patients and the public in planning services and the delivery of services, and in the development of proposals for changes. This duty is supported by the document ‘strengthening accountability – involving patients and the public’.
Section 11 of the Health Act requires us to make arrangements to involve and consult patients and the public in:
- planning how we will deliver services
- proposals for changes in the way those services are provided, and
- decisions that affect the operation of services.
