Primary care access centre

What is the Primary Care Access Centre?

If you cannot get an appointment with your GP, or if you do not think your condition is serious enough to need a visit to the GP then you can go to the primary care access centre to be treated for a range of minor injuries and illnesses.

The primary care access centre is a nurse practitioner led service based in Wansbeck General Hospital, Ashington. All the nurses who work at the centre have received further training to allow them to work at an advanced level, and they can prescribe.

The service treats conditions such as:

  • coughs, colds and flu
  • chest and throat infections
  • eye and ear problems
  • urinary problems
  • sprains and strains
  • burns and scalds
  • rashes and skin infections
  • emergency contraception
  • routine blood collection service (venepuncture service)

The centre also offers a dressings clinic, an ear irrigation / wax removal service, a stop smoking service and a contraceptive service.

Please note: the nurses at the centre cannot offer repeat precriptions. If you have a chronic (long-term) condition it is best to see your GP as they will know you better.
