Occupational therapy for people with learning disabilities
* Occupational therapists work with people who have different types of special needs.
* Occupational therapists help people to deal with and overcome their particular problems so that they can live as full and independent a life as possible.
About the service
Learning disabilities occupational therapists specialise in helping people who have learning disabilities.
We undertake assessments of the problems people have in carrying out activities essential to daily living. This might include activities such as cooking, washing, shopping or using money. Following on from assessment we make recommendations in order to help increase a person’s independence, assist in their discharge from hospital or provide them with improved care. Recommendations may include using a particular piece of equipment or changing a routine.
We are guided in our work by the standards of need as outlined in the fair access to care, services criteria.
There are times when adaptations to a persons home need to be considered, in these situations we are guided by the relevant government housing legislation.
