Macmillan palliative care team
The Northumberland Macmillan palliative (end of life) care team offers palliative care advice and support to patients, their families and carers and health professionals within the community. The team consists of specialists nurses and physiotherapists.
The Macmillan nurses are registered general nurses who have undertaken additional training. They are experts in pain and symptom control and in providing emotional support for patients and their carers.
Macmillan physiotherapists are experienced physiotherapists who provide rehabilitation and advice on mobility difficulties to patients and their carers. They work closely alongside the Macmillan nurses to offer a variety of therapies to assist with pain and symptom control.
Macmillan nurses and physiotherapists are also involved in the education and training of other health professionals.
Who is eligible?
If you have a life limiting illness that requires palliative care intervention you can be referred to the Macmillan service through your local GP, district nurse, or a hospital nurse or doctor looking after you.
What will happen?
Once you have been referred onto the service a member of the Macmillan team will contact you to arrange a mutally convenient time to visit. Initially you will be assessed and, if needed, future support may be offered. Though you may not be routinely visited we would encourage you to contact us following our initial visit if you have any further problems or queries. We will provide you with a contact telephone number that you can use to contact the team during working hours.

The Macmillan team works Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, excluding bank holidays. Telephone answering machines are in use when the team is not available and your call will be returned as soon as possible, usually within one working day.
