Speech and language therapy - adults
What does the service do?
The Northumberland adult acquired speech and language therapy service provides a range of community based services for people suffering from acquired speech, language and/or swallowing disorders. Acquired means that the adult was not born with the problems, they have developed over time.
We deliver our service in a number of community settings which can include out patient clinics, nursing and residential homes and patients homes. We undertake a detailed assessment and then devise and carry out or supervise an individually tailored programme of intervention and management.
Acquired speech, language and swallowing problems are most frequently caused by:
-
Neurological disease eg stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, dementia
-
Voice disorders and other ENT (ear, nose and throat) problems eg cancer of the head and neck (throat, tongue and larynx (voice box))
