Healthy living centres
Northumberland Care Trust along with local community groups and partner organisations has established a network of health living centres in disadvantaged communities in Northumberland. There are two health living centres open in Cleasewell and Newbiggen.
The centres are aimed at encouraging people who may not traditionally think about exercising in a gym into trying out facilities and equipment in a supported environment. This includes people with disabilities, pensioners, people with breathing or heart problems and patients with other health problems.
The centres also provide free health advice, fitness assessments, a wide range of activities, gym facilities and support for local people, particularly for those on benefit or a low income.
The focal point of each healthy living centre is a state-of-the-art gym with a wide range of modern equipment which is fully accessible to wheelchair users.
The range of facilities on offer includes:
- tailored exercise plans and state of the art exercise equipment
- rehabilitation for people with heart disease
- first aid training
- counselling and mental health support sessions, provided via MIND
- help to quit smoking and other drugs
- advice on nutrition and diet
- advice on sexual health and contraception
Healthy living centres have strong links into Northumberland County Council, different community groups and projects to help people improve their overall lifestyle and broaden their opportunities.
Qualified health and fitness instructors at the centre run cardio rehabilitation and exercise sessions and can refer users on to other community-based health and social services as required.
How can I access the centres?
In addition to purchasing a normal gym membership, referrals can be made via:
- GPs
- District nurses
- Smoking cessation workers
- Other health professionals
- Alcohol and drugs rehabilitation programmes.
