Frequently asked questions and comments
I’ve tried to quit before and it’s just too difficult!
Yes it can be a difficult thing to do but there are tips to make it easier and this is why gaining support, advice and medication from a trained advisor is so useful.
I’m sick of being nagged and told to stop smoking
Nobody likes to be told what to do and that is not what the stop smoking service is about. We are here to help those smokers who want to stop to achieve their goal. If you are not sure whether it is something you want to do we will give you information to help you make an informed choice.
I’ve tried to stop before. Can I have another go?
Absolutely. Stopping smoking is like learning to drive. Some people pass their test first time others need a few goes but get there in the end. You are up to four times more likely to quit if you use the stop smoking service.
I’d like to quit but I work shifts
We have a number of advisors who provide out of hours (and weekend) sessions. Contact us and we will help find a time and place that is suitable for you.
I’ve smoked for over 30 years. What’s the point of quitting now, won't the damage already be done?
The body is an amazing machine and there are always benefits to be gained from quitting. Stopping smoking is the single most beneficial thing a smoker can do to improve their health. You will also feel good about what you have managed to achieve.
I don’t smoke very many cigarettes so I should be okay
It’s not necessarily the number of cigarettes you smoke but how sensitive your body is to the chemicals and poisons contained within cigarette smoke. There is no such thing as a safe cigarette!
What will happen if I go to see a stop smoking advisor?
You will discuss your smoking history, any previous quit attempts and the types of medication available to help you quit.
Once you set a quit date you will receive medication and support throughout your quit attempt. If you do change your mind you can opt out at any time.
I’m pregnant, does that mean I won’t be able to use any medication to help me quit?
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is available for pregnant women.
Shirley Camsell is our stop smoking pregnancy specialist and following the first assessment session she will recommend the most suitable form of NRT to use.
