A healthy workforce is important not just to businesses but also to society in general. The cost of work-related ill health is huge, both economically and socially. The government recognises that the workplace is a crucial setting to improve the health of adults, leading to a better quality of life in later years.

The North east Better Health at Work award (BHAW) is a regional award scheme which has been developed to give recognition and endorsement to those workplaces that motivate workers in developing a sustainable culture of health and well-being.
